A 13-year-old Aviston middle school child collapsed in the huddle at a game in Carlyle
Dawn Powell shared her first post.
Last night my 13-year-old daughter collapsed while playing basketball. I wasn’t going to say anything but I am livid! Something needs to change and it needs to change now!! These are kids! These are kids playing sports in freaking masks! These are kids playing contact sports without a parent or guardian in the stands in case they get hurt or sick!

Go run a few miles in a mask and tell me how easy it is for you to breathe! I am very grateful our kids are on the court playing, but if this is the outcome I’m done! I am not saying this was solely caused by wearing a mask, but I am 100% positive it played a big part in what happened tonight. My daughter was just doing what she loves, playing basketball, she collided with another player which she has done a million times before! This time it was different, she felt dizzy and couldn’t catch her breath.... I wonder why maybe the mask restricting the air she was trying to take in!?! Maybe it was the fear of not being able to breathe or the jolt to the head, but things took a turn for the worse, and her body completely locked up, she couldn’t move her hands or her feet. Now.... try being a parent watching all of this unfold on a TV screen miles away! Completely helpless, not knowing what is going on, and not being able to get to your child immediately. Instead, you receive a call from someone saying they think your child needs to be transported by ambulance to the hospital! Now your fear and worry have turned into complete and utter panic. I am so very thankful for everyone that was there to help when I couldn’t be. Someone, please explain to me why I can watch a college basketball game on TV, played in our state, and not one player is wearing a mask!?! Explain to me why I can get on a crowded airplane and fly across the country but my 13-year-old daughter had to ride in an ambulance alone because of COVID. Explain to me why high school athletes can now have parents in the stands but junior high can’t?!?! Wake up, people!
So thankful for the people that were there to help her! The two teams came together to pray for my daughter after she was taken out of the gym.
